Music of India: Three Classical Rāgas is the album that introduced Ravi Shankar's fantastic music to the West. While not as dazzling as its follow-up (India's Master Musician), this album is invested in the long game. The half-hour-long opener, "Rāga Jog," builds slowly and subtly. Shankar masters mood in the earlier portions of the performance.

Like ragas, talas also have their own characteristics. Some of the older traditional talas, such as "Chautal" (12 beats) and "Dhamar" (14 beats) are played on a two-faced drum known as pakhawaj. This accompaniment is used in the old traditional "Dhrupad-Dhamar" form of singing and in instrumental performances on the veena, rabab, surbahar, etc.

The ragas begin slowly, discreetly, entrancingly, and build slowly to a crescendo which will sweep you up emotionally in a whirlwind of intensity and intensely skilled mastery of the sitar. Your heartrate will rise. Ravi Shankar was a true master. He and Alla Rakha, his accompanying tabla master, were an incomparable team/5(87).
